HC Deb 23 January 1974 vol 867 cc303-4W
Mr. James Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has now reached a decision regarding planning permission sought by Lanarkshire County Council for the new Roman Catholic secondary school in Bellshill.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

I have already written to the hon. Member informing him that I have approved the proposal.

Mr. James Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he can now estimate the effects of the latest cuts announced by the Chancellor on school building in Lanarkshire and Scotland.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The reductions in capital expenditure announced by the Chancellor in December do not affect the main school building programme or the programmes for special schools or minor works. Full details are set out in SED Circular No. 888 of 21st December of which I am sending a copy to the hon. Member. It is for each education authority to work out the effects of these measures on its programmes.

Following representations which it made to me, Lanarkshire education authority has been given an additional allocation of £415,000 for its main school building programme for 1974–75.
