HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 cc739-40W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what was the balance of trade—net figures—between the United Kingdom and each of the EFTA countries outside the EEC for each of the past five years;

(2) what was the balance of trade—net figures—between the United Kingdom and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, respectively, and with the Commonwealth in total, for each of the last five years;

(3) what was the balance of trade—net figures—between the United Kingdom and the COMECON countries, in total, for each of the past five years.

Mr. Shore

Information on a balance of payments basis for individual countries is not compiled. Estimates are available for certain broad geographical and economic groupings of countries, including EFTA and the EEC, and are published in Table 7 of the "United Kingdom Balance of Payments 1963–1973". Figures of exports valued fob and imports valued cif for individual countries are published in the "Annual Statement of Trade" for each of the years 1969 to 1972 and in the December issue of the Overseas Trade Statistics for 1973; but the difference between these figures is not an appropriate measure of the balance of trade with a country because.inter alia, of differences in valuation.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what was the balance of trade—net figures—between the United Kingdom and the nine other member States of the EEC for each of the past five years.

Mr. Deakins

Estimates of the balance of trade on a balance of payments basis with the EEC as a whole are published in Table 7 of the "United Kingdom Balance of Payments 1963–1973" for the years 1971 to 1973; figures for earlier years are given only for the EEC as constituted before 1973.
