Mr. Baker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the number of people employed by local authorities in England and Wales in June 1970, February 1974 and September 1974 or at a later date if such figures are available.

Mr. John Silkin

Figures published annually by the Department of Employment show that in June 1970 and June 1973, the latest date for which figures are available, the total number of staff of all categories employed by local authorities in England and Wales, including police forces, was 2,162,000 and 2,454,000 respectively.

Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the number of people employed by local authorities in each year from 1963 to the nearest convenient date.
