HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 cc744-5W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will publish the most recent figure for the number of food supermarkets.

Mr. Deakins

Defining a food supermarket as a self-service grocery shop with selling space of at least 2,000 square feet, the estimated number of supermarkets in Great Britain in 1971 was 5,066. This estimate, which is based on a simple count from the 1971 Census of Distribution, is provisional and may be revised when the full analyses of selling space and of self-service trading become available. No official estimates are available for later years.
