HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 c643W
Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of the calorific value of each of the fuels used is converted into electricity during the generation process.

Mr. Eadie

The thermal efficiency of a large modern fossil-fuelled generating station is about 35 per cent. and does not vary significantly between coal, oil or gas fuels. At any point in time the average thermal efficiency of plant using one type of fuel varies according to the historic mix of plant and the load on the system. Values of the efficiency of each of the generating board's stations can be found in the CEGB Statistical Year Book in the House of Commons Library.
