§ Mr. Mike Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Energy whether any information is at the disposal of his Department or of the industries concerned as to the pattern of electricity and gas domestic consumption in Great Britain in addition to that contained in the Family Expenditure Survey 1973; and if he will list the sources and nature of such information in the OFFICIAL REPORT, particularly such information as relates the number of units of electricity or therms of gas consumed to income level, type of household and nature of dwelling of the consumer.
§ Mr. VarleyIn addition to the special analysis of the Family Expenditure Survey-data which the Department of Employment prepares for my Department, we also have the benefit of estimates prepared by the Electricity Council and by the British Gas Corporation on some aspects of the usage of their appliances and fuel. These are a by-product of market research investigations commissioned by the industries for marketing purposes and I am asking the chairmen to write to the hon. Member.
§ Mr. Penhaligonasked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) if he will show in the OFFICIAL REPORT the demand level for electricity against time for a typical November day;
(2) if he will estimate during which hours of 17th December 1974 the electricity demand was greater than that 641W which could be generated by exclusively using coal, hydro-electric, gas and nuclear energy.
§ Mr. EadieThese are matters for the CEGB. I am writing to the chairman to see if he can write to the hon. Member giving the information required.
§ Mr. Penhaligonasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT the percentage of oil generated electricity used in each of the EEC countries.
§ Mr. EadieFigures are not available of the amounts of oil-generated electricity used because of imports and exports of electricity for which the fuel source cannot be identified. Following are the percentages of total net production of electricity in 1972, the latest year for which figures are available, estimated to be produced from oil in each of the EEC countries:
percentage Germany … … … 14.9 France … … … 33.8 Italy … … … 55.2 Netherlands … … … 20.5 Belgium … … … 51.3 Luxembourg … … … 20.5 United Kingdom … … … 30.2 Ireland … … … 64.2 Denmark … … … 81.1 These percentages have been calculated from figures published in "Energy Statistics Yearbook 1969–1972"—Statistical Office of the European Communities (1973).
§ Mr. Penhaligonasked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of the oil now imported is used by vehicles on the roads.
§ Mr. John SmithThe proportion, which depends on seasonal consumption patterns, is approximately 20 per cent.
§ Mr. Penhaligonasked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of the oil used by road vehicles is used by the private motorist.
§ Mr. John SmithFigures in respect of the private motorist are not available. During 1973, approximately 60 per cent. of the oil used by road vehicles was used in all cars and motor cycles.
