HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 cc590-1W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what progress has been made by road authorities in the substitution of full for abbreviated place names not readily intelligible, particularly to strangers and tourists, since his predecessor's Written Answer of 3rd April 1973 to the hon. Member for Chigwell.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland has replaced many of the abbreviated place name signs and has given priority to those which were not readily intelligible to strangers or tourists or which were on main traffic routes. The remainder will be replaced as opportunity permits.
