HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 cc550-1W
Mr. Thorpe

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much is spent on administration in the National Health Service; and what proportion of total expenditure this represents.

Dr. Owen

In 1973–74, the latest year for which figures are available, administrative expenditure by hospital and practitioner services authorities was approximately £98.7 million, representing 4.5 per cent. of total expenditure. For community health and school health services, which then were the responsibility of local authorities, administrative expenditure was about £11 million or 5 per cent. of total expenditure.
