asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people have been housed by local authorities in temporary accommodation in 1974 and in each year from 1968.

The following number of people were housed by local authorities in temporary accommodation on 30th June 1974, the latest date for which figures are available, and for each year from 1968:

30th June 1973 26,437
30th June 1974 28,546

The figure for 1972 does not include those for whom temporary accommodation was provided by housing departments of some London boroughs.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many families temporarily housed by local authorities are in hotels; and what is the average weekly cost per family to local authorities in London and in the rest of England and Wales.

Figures are available at present only for London. 1,249 families were temporarily housed by London boroughs in bed and breakfast accommodation on 30th June 1974, the latest date for which figures are available. Information is not collected about costs.
