HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 c566W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied with the amount spent on research into the cause of cancer; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prentice

The main contributions to cancer research are made by the Medical Research Council, the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the Cancer Research Campaign, all of which are represented on the Co-ordinating Committee for Cancer Research which keeps activity under continuing review. Relevant expenditure by the Medical Research Council, which continues to give high priority to research in this field, in 1973‒74 was £3,737 million, compared with £2,929 million in 1972–73. Further research supported by public funds is carried out under the auspices of the Health Departments, hospital boards, universities and medical schools.

The United Kingdom Government make an annual contribution—£100,000 in 1973–74—to the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
