HC Deb 18 December 1974 vol 883 c448W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the real increase in major road expenditure, including bridges, when comparing the periods 1962–68 and 1968–74.

Mr. William Ross

At 1974 prices, central Government expenditure on major improvement schemes and new construction was about £208 million for the period 1968–74—an increase of about £66 million, or 47 per cent., over the comparable expenditure for 1962–68.

Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will pay a visit to Shetland to experience the roads.

Mr. William Ross

I have at present no plans for a visit to Shetland. Shetland County Council, as highway authority, is doing much to improve public roads on the islands with the help, where appropriate, of Government grant.
