HC Deb 17 December 1974 vol 883 cc425-6W
Mr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is the amount of annual remuneration paid to the part-time chairmen and vice-chairmen of the newly constituted regional water authorities in England respectively;

(2) approximately what proportion of the working week the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the newly constituted regional water authorities in England, respectively, are expected to devote to the discharge of their functions as such.

Mr. Denis Howell

Water authority chairmen were appointed in July and August 1973 on the basis that they would give two and a half days a week to this work. Their current remuneration is as follows:

Chairmen of the Thames, Severn-Trent and North West Water Authorities £7,790
Chairmen of the Yorkshire, Anglian and Southern Water Authorities £6,290
Chairmen of the Northumbrian, Wessex and South West Water Authorities £5,540

It is a matter for each individual authority to decide whether to appoint a vice-chairman and how his expenses should be met. I understand that only the Thames authority has done so.
