asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of social workers employed by each local authority social services department; and if he will express the totals per 1,000 of the population in each of the counties, and in Wales.

597 full-time and 36 part-time social workers were employed by local authority social services departments in Wales at the last complete enumeration. This corresponds to a rate of 0.22 whole time equivalents per 1,000 population. The geographical distribution is:
