§ Mr. Steenasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will issue a circular to local authorities advising them that the maximum permitted density of people in dwelling-houses and flats be restricted to no more than 100 persons per acre.
§ Mr. KaufmanWhile general advice about densities is given to local authorities from time to time, it would not be desirable to try to specify a precise density limit. Even high blocks of flats can, in appropriate circumstances, provide satisfactory accommodation for some people. They are not, however, satisfactory for families with children, and I am glad to say that the number being built by local authorities has declined markedly over recent years.
