HC Deb 16 December 1974 vol 883 cc332-3W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if any complaints against the activities of private security firms have been referred to his Department; what action has been taken; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

A small number of complaints has been received in recent years, and those alleging criminal offences have been referred to the police, or the complainant has been advised to report the matter to them. More general complaints have usually been answered by explaining that private security firms and their employees have no special status under the law and are subject to the same legal restraints as other private firms and citizens.

Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now introduce legislation to control the activities of private security firms; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to a Question by him on 13th December.— [Vol. 83, c.276.]

Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consultations his Department has had with the Police Federation concerning the activities of private security firms; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

No occasion has arisen for formal consultations, but the Home Office had some correspondence with the Police Federation on this subject last year.
