HC Deb 16 December 1974 vol 883 c332W
Mr. Lane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his policy for the admission of Cypriots wishing to enter the United Kingdom; to what extent it has changed since the troubles in Cyprus; and how it is working in practice as regards eligibility, numbers and other relevant factors.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The admission of Cypriots is regulated by the Immigration Rules for Control on Entry (HC 79 and Cmnd 5715). We have been applying the rules flexibly, in current circumstances, as i explained in reply to a Question from my hon. Friend the Member for Holborn and St. Pancras, South (Mrs. Jeger) on 9th December.—[Vol. 883, c.41.]

In the last four months some 9,000 Cypriots have been admitted, mostly for short periods, and some 130 have been refused leave to enter, generally because it was apparent that permanent settlement, for which they were not eligible, was intended.
