NOTES :

1. Numbers in employment relate to employees in employment. The civilian working population also includes employers, self-employed persons, and the registered unemployed.

2. Discontinuities in the numbers in employment occurred in the years 1966 and 1969 due to industrial re-classification. Also, in 1969 better information was obtained regarding the regional distribution of persons employed in the distributive trades. The (a) and (b) figures refer to estimates on the old and new bases respectively.

3.Up to 1971(a), estimates of numbers employed were based primarily on counts of national insurance cards. From 1971(b) estimates are based on censuses of employment.
