HC Deb 06 December 1974 vol 882 cc652-3W
Mr. Sedgemore

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people in the United Kingdom changed their jobs in each of the years 1970 to 1973; and how many were out of work in each year for over one month.

Mr. Booth

The number of Forms P45 received by the Inland Revenue gives a very approximate indication of the number of job terminations as opposed to changes—namely, some 9 million to 10 million annually for the United Kingdom. The circumstances in which a Form P45 should be issued are such that the number of job changes would be less than the number of these forms. Figures are not available for the numbers unemployed for particular lengths of spell of unemployment.

Mr. Sedgemore

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people became unemployed in the United Kingdom from June 1970 to June 1972; what these figures would be as a percentage of those who changed jobs during this period; how they were eventually re-employed; and what contribution they are now making to production enterprise.

Mr. Booth

The number of registrations at employment offices by unemployed persons in the United Kingdom between June 1970 and June 1972 was 8,134,000. Some persons would register more than once. The number excludes those registering at careers offices and with professional and executive recruitment but includes some persons who have previously not been in employment. Information is not at present available on the number of persons who changed jobs in the period June 1970 to June 1972, or on the re-employment of the unemployed.
