HC Deb 06 December 1974 vol 882 c639W
Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will now restrict trawling for plaice and soles within the 12-mile belt by vessels exceeding 25 gross registered tons, or with engines exceeding 150 horsepower.

Mr. Bishop

At its last meeting the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission approved a resolution which would restrict trawling for soles and plaice by heavier vessels in the coastal waters on the eastern side of the North Sea. The Government are now considering, in consultation with representatives of our fishing industry, whether acceptance of this recommendation by the member countries of the commission would make it desirable to adopt similar measures off the British coast.
