HC Deb 05 December 1974 vol 882 c559W
Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in view of the decline in milk production in the South-West of England, he will make a statement on the prospects for the resumption of the manufacture of English butter.

Mr. Bishop

The quantities of milk used for particular products are determined by those engaged in the trade, in the light of the market situation, including the demand for particular products and the total quantity of milk available for manufacture.

The measures the Government have taken to increase milk producers' returns were designed to stimulate production and increase the total quantity of milk available for manufacture.

Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by how much butter imports into the United Kingdom have increased this year so far.

Mr. Bishop

Provisional figures for the nine months ended September 1974, the latest period for which figures are available, show that imports of butter into the United Kingdom have increased by 39,600 tons over the same period of 1973.
