HC Deb 04 December 1974 vol 882 c478W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, as there is now evidence that the sperm whale is in danger of extinction and as sperm oil substitutes are available, whether he will extend to sperm whale products the import ban which he has already imposed on other whale products.

Mr. Bishop

No. According to the international scientific advice given at the last meeting of the International Whaling Commission, the sperm whale is in no danger of extinction at the present level of exploitation. Sperm oil substitutes are so far available only for a limited number of the commercial processes for which sperm oil is used.
