Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Africans and Europeans, respectively, are students at the University of Rhodesia; how many degrees of the Universities of London and Birmingham and the University of Rhodesia itself have been awarded to them to date; and what further assistance Her Majesty's Government propose to give to the university.

According to the University of Rhodesia there are 507 Europeans and 364 Africans currently studying full time for degrees. In addition, there are 451 students—347 European, 91 African, 13 others—following part-time degree courses, 152 students—51 Europeans, 99 Africans, two others— taking graduate certificates in education, and 259 postgraduate students. To date 1,781 degrees of the Universities of London, Birmingham and Rhodesia have been awarded to University of Rhodesia students.

The university receives no financial assistance from Her Majesty's Government and none is at present contemplated.
