HC Deb 03 December 1974 vol 882 cc408-9W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many of those included in the most recent unemployment figures have been unemployed for more than one year; and how many have never had a job at all.

Mr. John Fraser

In October 1974 an analysis of the length of time unemployed indicated that out of 622,634 unemployed persons in Great Britain 127,720 had been unemployed for more than 52 weeks. The statistics do not identify all those on the registers who have never previously been in employment at all, but they show that 13,413 school leavers, under 18 years of age, had not entered employment since leaving full-time education. The figures for a small proportion of offices are estimated.

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons included in the most recent unemployment figures had reached the retiring age in their particular profession before registering as unemployed; and how many are in receipt of occupational pensions.

Mr. John Fraser

This information is not available. No separate count is made of unemployed persons who have reached retiring age in their particular professions before registering for employment and no separate count is made of occupational pensioners as a group. Results of the sample survey held in June 1973 indicated that at that time about 50,000 of the unemployed were occupational pensioners.
