HC Deb 03 December 1974 vol 882 cc442-3W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give examples of how the rates of pay and allowances of non-commissioned officers and men compare as between Gurkha and British troops.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

General comparisons cannot be made because, under the terms of the 1947 tripartite agreement between the United Kingdom, India and Nepal, Gurkha soldiers in the British Army are paid at the same basic pay rates as their counterparts in the Indian Army, with special supplements when they are serving outside the Indian subcontinent.

Gurkha pay and allowances therefore vary according to the circumstances. I shall write to the hon. Member with the details.
