Mr. Tom Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT a list showing the numbers employed in manufacturing industries in Wales expressed as a percentage of the total population of Wales and of the working population of Wales for each of the last 10 years.

Notes:

1. In 1966 a revision was made to the industrial classification of some establishments. Estimates for 1966(a), 1966(b) are based on the old, new classifications respectively.

2. Estimates of the numbers employed up to 1969(a) are based on the 1958 Standard Industna Classification. Estimates from 1969(b) are based on the 1968 Standard Industrial Classification Also in 1969 better information was obtained on the regional distribution of persons employed in the distributive trades.

3. Estimates of employees in employment up to 1971(a) were based primarily on counts of nationa insurance cards. From 1971(b) estimates have been based on annual censuses of employment.
