HC Deb 03 December 1974 vol 882 cc424-5W
Mr. Lane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what safeguards are now operating to prevent abuse of the Immigration Rules governing entry of men or women to join spouses settled in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

A person seeking to join a spouse settled here has to obtain an entry clearance before starting his or her journey. The customary safeguards, for the verification of applications for an entry clearance are applied and all cases are examined most carefully.

Mr. Lane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate he has made of the numbers of (a) men, and (b) women in the Indian subcontinent who will seek to join spouses settled in the United Kingdom during each of the years 1974 to 1978.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

It has not been the practice to publish future forecasts of entry. Of necessity, they would be somewhat speculative. I propose to make no change in this regard. Statistics of spouses admitted for settlement will be published quarterly.

Mr. Lane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what grounds he decided to modify his initial estimate of the level of male immigration—which he originally judged to be substantial—likely to follow from a decision to extend the right of entry to husbands of British women settled in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mather

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what grounds he decided to modify his initial estimates of the rate of increase in male immigration likely to follow on a decision to extend the right of entry to husbands of British women resident in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Because I decided that the increased rate of male immigration was unquantifiable but probably exaggerated, while the injustice was clear, widely felt and indefensible.
