§ Mr. Higginsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what regulations exist governing the shipment of live animals and birds by air to and from the United Kingdom; whether they cover the type and size of container and ventilation and stowage; what penalties may be imposed on those not conforming to any such regulations; and whether he is satisfied that measures taken are adequate to prevent suffering to animals and birds in transit.
§ Mr. StrangThe Transit of Animals (General) Order 1973 provides safeguards for the welfare of all animals, including birds, transported by air to and from Great Britain. It covers the suitability of containers, ventilation and stowage and other aspects of animal welfare. Similar provisions apply in Northern Ireland. First offenders can be fined and further offences may result in imprisonment. I am satisfied that this legislation provides adequate protection for animals trans-438W ported by air whilst under our jurisdiction.
§ Mr. Higginsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what estimates he has made of the percentage of animals and birds, respectively, that are shipped live by air and arrive in the United Kingdom dead.
§ Mr. StrangI regret that no such estimate is available.
