HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 c342W
Mr. Normanton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he has taken to ensure that equitable compensation be paid to those British subjects whose property was confiscated by the Tanzanian authorities; if he is satisfied that the sums paid to date have been equitable; and if he will make a statement.

Miss Joan Lestor

The principle of paying compensation has been accepted by the Government of Tanzania and valuations of a number of properties are proceeding. We shall continue our discussions on the remaining unresolved cases. As regards the second part of the Question, the sums paid to date represent the best settlements we have been able to obtain on the basis of local valuations and Tanzanian law.
