HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 c385W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much money has already been spent on providing lighting on motorways; and what is the estimated expenditure for 1974–75 and 1975–76.

Mr. Carmichael

Expenditure in respect of the present fog-prone programme is as follows:

To 31st March, 1974 £1.9million
Estimated expenditure for:
1974–75 £1.3 million
1975–76 £1.1 million

These costs include the necessary alterations to the central reserve safety fences. The expenditure on other lighting installed as an integral part of motorway construction is not readily available.

Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of motorway have now been provided with lighting; and what further provision is proposed for the next five years.

Mr. Carmichael

To date lighting has been provided on some 160 miles of the Department's motorways and is about to be installed on a further 67 miles. There is no continuing programme for lighting motorways; each case is considered on its merits, and I cannot anticipate what lighting may be provided over the next five years.
