§ Mr. John Evansasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will set up an inquiry to investigate the effects of the Channel Tunnel on the various regions of England;
(2) what benefits he estimates would accrue to the economy of the North-West Region of England from the Channel Tunnel.
§ Mr. CarmichaelThe White Paper (Cmnd. 5430) published by the previous administration concluded that it was not possible to quantify the effect of the tunnel on particular parts of the United Kingdom. It is open to the independent advisers chaired by Sir Alec Cairncross to review this conclusion.
