Mr. Cordle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the ratio between patients and the number of hospital beds suitable for acute medical cases and/or surgical cases in the Bournemouth area.

Dr. Owen

Facilities for patients from the Bournemouth-Poole area are available at the hospitals in the new East Dorset health district. The ratio of the patients discharged from hospitals in the district during the quarter ended 31st December 1973 to the total number of general medical and general surgical beds there is 29:1.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the ratio between patients and the number of hospital beds suitable for acute medical cases and/or surgical cases in the Wessex Regional Hospital Board area.

The ratio of the number of patients discharged from hospital in Wessex in the quarter ended 31st December 1973 to the total number of general medical and surgical beds there is 30:1.

On the basis that the South of England comprises the areas of the East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall area health authorities, the ratio of the total number of patients discharged from hospitals in the South of England to the total number of general medical and general surgical beds there is 32.8:1.
