asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many adults, children beneath the age of 16 years and children beneath the age of 5 years, respectively, were treated in hospital for food poisoning in each of the last five years for which records are available; what was the average period during which the patients were detained in hospital; and how many in each category died.

Available information is as follows:

Estimates of hospital spells are based, as far as England and Wales are concerned, on sample data. Numbers of corresponding deaths in the sample are too small to enable reliable estimates to be made; the figures quoted are therefore of all deaths from these causes, whether in hospital or elsewhere.
