HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc372-3W
Mr. Jay

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much beef is now held in storage by the EEC authorities.

Mr. Peart

I understand from the EEC Commission that the total amount of beef purchased under the permanent intervention arrangements is now about 75,000 tons.

Mr. Jay

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the purpose of intervention buying of beef for storage.

Mr. Peart

The system aims at firming up producer prices by taking beef off the market when it is weak. As I said in my statement to the House on 25th March, I have obtained an option not to operate the system in the United Kingdom.
