HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 c380W
Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will instruct commercial attachés in British embassies to hold a watching brief on attempts in countries such as Japan to register local companies in the names of Scottish companies.

Mr. Ennals

Commercial officers in British embassies have standing instructions to be on the watch for cases of unfair competition, such as attempts by foreign firms to register trade marks, generic terms or geographical descriptions associated with Britain or British products. They would regard attempts to register local companies in the names of Scottish companies in the same light.
