HL Deb 10 April 1974 vol 350 c1360WA
LORD BALFOUR OF INCHRYE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the correct name of the E.E.C. non-elected nominated body of extremely restricted powers is "the European Assembly"; and whether they will endeavour to discourage its assumption of the title and status of a European Parliament.

LORD GORONWY-ROBERTS

The E.E.C. Treaty follows the French practice in referring to the institution as the "Assembly" and so do later treaties (including the Treaty of Accession). The institution itself prefers to be known as the "European Parliament" and adopted a resolution to this effect on March 30, 1962. Her Majesty's Government will continue to use whichever term is appropriate in the circumstances.
