HC Deb 09 April 1974 vol 872 cc146-7W
Sir A. Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many communications he has received regarding the water rate to be levied by the Wales Water Authority; and what replies he has sent.

Mr. John Morris

I have received communications from several right hon. and hon. Members, from local authorities, agricultural and industrial interests, and from other bodies and individuals. In my replies I have explained the action proposed by the Chairman of the Welsh National Water Development Authority as outlined by my hon. Friend in his reply to the debate on Welsh affairs on 21st March. The increased water charges are a consequence of the financial provisions of the Water Act 1973 passed by the previous administration.

Mr. Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will instigate an investigation or inquiry into the reasons for increases in water charges under the Welsh National Water Development Authority being more than those of other regions.

Mr. John Morris

No. However, the Chairman of the Welsh National Water Development Authority has agreed that, over the next 12 months, the authority will review its estimates and charging policy.
