HC Deb 08 April 1974 vol 872 cc37-8W
Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the future use of North Weald aerodrome.

Mr. Freeson

With the exception of the married quarters, one hangar and a barrack block, North Weald airfield is now surplus to Ministry of Defence requirements and its disposal is being dealt with by my Department's Property Services Agency.

The Home Office is proposing to provide a remand centre for young offenders on part of the built-up area, for which it has obtained outline planning approval. The Property Services Agency is awaiting clear planning indications from the local planning authority on the remainder of the airfield so that decisions can be taken on the appropriate method of disposal.
