HC Deb 08 April 1974 vol 872 cc7-8W
Mr. Radice

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement about trade with the United States of America in confectionery and about the United States of America confectionery quota.

Mr. Shore

We have useful and increasing export trade with the United States of America in confectionery, but since 1972 this trade has been subject to quantitative import restrictions. I view with great concern the possibility that these restrictions, which are, in our opinion, contrary to GATT, might be retained in the 1974 Sugar Bill currently before Congress. We have brought to the attention of the United States administration our strong dislike of the restrictions, and the administration itself has indicated its opposition to them in testimony provided by the State Department on 19th February. At our instigation the European Community has recently had consultations with the United States under Article XXIII of the GATT at which our point of view was registered. I hope that these representations will prove to be effective.
