HC Deb 05 April 1974 vol 871 cc445-6W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what were gross average weekly earnings in agriculture in 1973; what was estimated to be the value of allowances in kind for agricultural workers; what was the average number of hours worked per week; and how these figures compare with the situation in other industries.

Mr. Moyle

My Department's wages and employment inquiry for England and Wales indicates that in 1973 the gross weekly earnings of hired whole-time male agricultural workers averaged £27–63 for a 47–9-hour week. This included payments in kind averaging 50p in value. No directly comparable figures are available for other industries, but the hon. Member may care to refer to the United Kingdom earnings data, under the various standard industrial classifications, as published in the Department of Employment'sGazette.
