HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 cc360-1W
55. Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has yet made a decision on proposals to retain the 50 mph speed limit on all single-carriageway roads with a 70 mph limit on all other dual carriageways and motorways.

81. Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will consider giving priority to trunk roads such as the Al in determining the programme for reintroducing the 70 mph speed limit on roads other than motorways.

Mr. Mulley

The 70 mph limit is now back in force on the motorways. As I have made plain, it is my intention to reintroduce it on all-purpose roads as soon as the fuel situation permits. Any attempt in the interval to distinguish between roads would be bound to create problems and confuse drivers.
