HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 cc381-2W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which slaughterhouses in Scotland fall below EEC standards; and for what reasons.

Mr. William Ross

There are 72 slaughterhouses in Scotland, either local authority or privately owned, of which 15 have been approved to EEC standards; several new developments are under construction or at the planning stage and my information is that all of these are being built with a view to meeting these standards.

Whilst all slaughterhouse developments must comply with domestic regulations it is a matter for the commercial judgment of the developer as to whether a slaughterhouse should also conform to the requirements for exporting meat to other EEC countries.
