asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases of secondary infection from poliomyelitis vaccines have occurred in the United Kingdom over the last 10 years.

Between 1964 and 1973, 20 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis and 34 cases of other neurological illnesses possibly due to polio virus were reported in persons who had received polio vaccine within the previous 28 days; 20 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis and six cases of other neurological illnesses were reported in contacts of persons vaccinated within the previous 60 days.

Equivalent figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland are not readily available but will be obtained and sent to the hon. Member.
