HC Deb 01 April 1974 vol 871 c278W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment to what extent Members of Parliament who serve on local authorities as borough or county councillors are allowed to claim expenses and loss of income in addition to their parliamentary salaries and expenses; and on what basis of statutory entitlement such claims are made or permitted.

Mr. Crosland

The allowances code now in force will be replaced on 1st April 1974, by the new arrangements in Part VIII of the Local Government Act 1972. All councillors, including those who are Members of Parliament, will be entitled to claim attendance, subsistence and travelling allowances in respect of approved duties connected with membership of the council.
