HC Deb 01 April 1974 vol 871 cc271-2W
Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT of the number of experiments upon live animals authorised in 1973, the number of inspectors employed to supervise such experiments and an analysis of the purposes for which the experiments were carried out.

Dr. Summerskill

Figures of experiments for 1973 are not yet available. The annual Return of Experiments on Living Animals will be presented to Parliament during the summer. The complement of inspectors was increased in 1973 to 14. The return does not distinguish between the purposes of experiments except in respect of cancer research, diagnostic procedures and the mandatory testing of drugs.
