asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he has taken to ensure that the EEC rules recognise Scottish academic and professional qualifications.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Educa- tion and Science and I are keeping in close touch with the deliberations of the EEC on questions concerning the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. Where questions of separate Scottish qualifications arise, both I and the appropriate professional institutions or organisations have an opportunity to participate.
