HC Deb 27 November 1973 vol 865 c86W
43. Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on progress in the establishment of jobcentres.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

At 5th November 1973, 16 jobcentres had been opened, and it is expected that at least 25 more will open in the current financial year. We therefore expect to meet the target, as stated in "Into Action", of about 40 jobcentres in the first year. We aim to open at least a further 100 jobcentres in 1974–75. Although the programme for establishing jobcentres is in an early stage, present indications are that the early jobcentres are placing at least 50 per cent. more people in jobs than the employment offices which they replaced.
