HC Deb 12 November 1973 vol 864 c9W
Mr. Mason

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry why he has not proposed enacting the Rochdale Committee's report on the establishment of a statutory marine safety authority; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will implement the recommendations of the Rochdale inquiry into shipping that a statutory marine safety authority be established; and if he will make a statement on the reasons for the decision.

Mr. Onslow

As announced on 8th March 1972, it was decided that the balance of advantage lay against setting up a statutory marine authority, and that Ministers should continue to exercise direct responsibility to Parliament for the related questions of safety at sea and marine pollution, and for the establishment of appropriate international and national standards of ship construction, equipment and operation.
