§ Mr. Juddasked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make a progress report on the research into the long- and short-term effects on physical and mental health and on consequent social behaviour of lead poisoning; and whether he will make a statement on the action being taken by his Department to combat this menace more effectively.
§ Sir K. JosephI am advised that there is very little positive evidence of lead poisoning in the United Kingdom and that the raised blood lead levels that have been detected indicate that those concerned are only mildly affected. A good deal of research evidence has recently been received in my Department and the Chief Medical Officer has asked a group of experts to assess it. Action by the Departments concerned will be taken in the light of the medical advice given by my Department.
