HC Deb 12 June 1973 vol 857 c299W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Minister of State for Defence what reports he has received of the violation of designated naval cemeteries such as HMS "Royal Oak" by amateur divers; if he will consider introducing deterrents including, if appropriate, the use of acoustic devices; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Buck

No such reports have been received. Although my attention has been drawn to recent newspaper accounts of the activities of amateur divers at the site of HMS "Royal Oak", we have been unable to establish definite evidence that the vessel has been violated. We do, of course, attempt to discourage such interference. Apart from the moral objections, diving on wrecked warships can be a hazardous occupation.
