asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the negotiated charges for a full year between the Department and the Post Office for the payment of unemployment benefit by Giro cheque.

The payment of unemployment benefit nationally by Giro cheque was introduced on 2nd July 1973. Increases in Giro charges proposed by the Post Office are under negotiation and at present levels the total Giro charges would be of the order of £1 million.
